Nestled in Atlanta’s Sweet Auburn neighborhood and the Martin Luther King historic district, the Edgewood Center has been providing permanent affordable supportive housing for nearly 40 years. Using Low Income Housing Tax Credits, Historic Tax Credits, public funding, and philanthropic grants, Edgewood Center has been redesigned to improve the quality and quantity of housing options for Atlantans.
The historic buildings at 183 and 187 Edgewood Avenue were originally constructed by the Coca Cola Company in 1898 and 1904, respectively. In the 1950s the roof of 183 Edgewood collapsed. The upper levels were demolished and removed, leaving only the first story and foundations in place.
To provide additional capacity and improve residents’ quality of life, additional usable area was created by rebuilding the upper levels of 183 Edgewood and combining the two buildings into one. New construction captures the spirit of the district and previous building by using massing, materials, proportions, and rhythms consistent with their historic character.
The expanded center houses 50 residents, and the previous dorm-style rooms have been upgraded to single room occupancy studios. Throughout the building are shared living areas, medical treatment room, community room, fitness center, laundry, and computer room for residents’ use.
The project prepares the historic building for its next century of life—creating a win for affordable housing, a win for the historic district, and a win for historic preservation.
