Oxford, GA
On the National Register-listed Emory Oxford College quad, Humanities Hall was built in 1874 as a classroom building and is one of the major post-Civil War “second generation” buildings at Oxford College. As such, it is a part of the original and most historic fabric of the campus. The building style is somewhat eclectic, combining Greek Revival massing with Italianate terra cotta detailing.
After almost 150 years of continuous use and a variety of partial remodeling projects obscuring its historical character, Humanities Hall underwent a total renovation in order to return it to its proper place as one of the premier academic buildings on the Oxford campus. The vision for the rehabilitation was to reveal, preserve, and celebrate the original fabric of the building in order to tell its past story while sensitively inserting the new classrooms and utilities necessary to create a state of the art academic setting that can be used long into the future.
