McAuley Park is a mixed-use project in Atlanta’s Sweet Auburn district that strives to provide “healthcare where it’s needed most.” The original Mercy Care Clinic on the site was an existing 2-story building that had been expanded on multiple occasions but continued to struggle with difficult exterior access, a fragmented appearance, disjointed circulation, and inadequate space. Addressing these needs required a campus expansion plan to house leadership and administration, as well as expanding the clinic.
To this end, the adjacent McAuley Center was built, a new 3-story annex that houses administration and physician offices as well as a street-level resource center for human resources and volunteer services. The Center connects to the original Clinic by a daylit internal bridge, as well as a covered exterior colonnade and entry canopy that unites the built language of both old and new.
By relocating office uses to McAuley Center, the Clinic’s capacity was doubled with two new medical hubs, additional dentists’ chairs, and a larger waiting room. Spatial relationships were reorganized, internal flow was streamlined, and building systems were modernized. And it was accomplished as a rolling, phased renovation that allowed the facility to remain open throughout its multi-year construction.
Site work includes reconfiguration of parking and circulation, new streetscapes, and improved pedestrian access from the nearby King Memorial MARTA station. Affordable multi-family and senior housing are planned for adjacent sites, working in concert with McAuley Park to nurture the overall well-being of Atlanta’s people.
