Skyland Trail is a nationally recognized mental health organization offering psychiatric care alongside a holistic path to wellness. This project expands their services by combining the renovation of a 1970s office building with a new residential building into a healing campus for teens. Although urban, the two buildings hinge on an active landscaped courtyard which is in turn surrounded by forest.
Serving residential and day-treatment clients, the clinical building has been comprehensively retrofitted to accommodate light-filled therapy rooms, clinicians’ offices, admission, medical suite, as well as the kitchen, dining area, and game room.
The new two-story residential building houses 26 en suite rooms. Well-appointed living, kitchen, and dining commons are included on each floor. Although the design focuses on mental health and safety, these residences are far from institutional–instead evoking a sense of informality, inclusion, and warmth.
