This deck serves as a beacon for The Works, visible and recognizable from surrounding neighborhoods. The deck adds to the visitor experience by consolidating parking for multiple buildings into one location and connecting people with multiple paths, courtyards, and amenities to help form a cohesive whole.
Construction is of precast concrete with a steel substructure holding a screen of aluminum panels. There are 518 metal panels of 36 different shapes, laser cut from heavy aluminum coil stock and coated different colors on each side. Drawing inspiration from origami, each panel was pre-fabricated, shipped flat, and bent to its final profile on site.
The deck’s interactive design merges art and branding with practicality. Its multi-colored patterns and changing perforation offers an ever-changing play of light, color, and shadow. Night lighting from cutouts, glassed areas, and the elevator shaft provides a lantern-like glow, illuminating The Work’s evening ambience.
